Mixed blessing for US workplaces on output

Good news: productivity in the US has been growing at a remarkable clip. It was up 6.6 per cent in the second quarter, the latest for which data are available, and looks certain to improve at a blow-out pace in the third quarter.

Bad news: the labour market continues to disappoint, with both job losses and the decline in total hours worked looking a good deal worse than should be expected based on the decline in output during the recession.
