Operation boosts stem cell hopes

The pioneering transplant of a “tissue-engineered” human airway, using the patient’s stem cells, is expected to boost prospects for the wider uptake of such advanced treatments, scientists and doctors said.

Claudia Castillo, a Colombian woman, received her new trachea in an operation at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona in Spain after four years of breathing difficulties caused by tuberculosis.
