“Crisis, what crisis?” was the misquote commonly attributed to prime minister Jim Callaghan as British manufacturing stumbled through economic crisis towards Labour’s general election defeat in 1979.

And there have been echoes of Sunny Jim’s contrarian optimism from many manufacturing and engineering-related companies which have been reporting over the last couple of weeks.
